DJ FRESH F.T. RITA ORA 'HOT RIGHT NOW' MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS

‘Hot Right Now’ is of the dance genre and so it focuses on the codes and conventions within the genre. Close ups and medium close ups have been used to create a star image, so that the audience can recognise the artist as well as allowing the artist build their own iconography. The diegetic and soft lighting makes the artist appear glamorous as her facial features are highlighted as well as having a halo effect around her head. The sun creates quite a happy atmosphere because the sun has connotations such as ‘warm’ and ‘summer’. The sun has also been used to create a silhouette effect which conceals her identity but also makes her appear quite prominent within the shot.

A lens flare has also been used so that the light appears to shine on her as well as making the shot three-dimensional as opposed to looking quite flat. The location appears to be abandoned and covered in graffiti, so this is stereotypically linked with youth and young people; this creates a relationship with the music and visuals because the visuals are linked with youth. Clothing such as hats, baggy trousers and shutter shades are typical of the genre as it focuses on the dance and performance side. Dancing and jumping around is also typical of the dance genre, it matches the energy of the music and so there is a relationship between the visuals and music.

The fast pace of edit and short shot duration matches the speed and energy of the music and so this makes it more visually exciting. The use of a long shot allows the focus to be mainly on the artist’s body rather than her face, this is because sexualisation has been used to entertain and please the audience. Low angles have been used as this makes the artist appear dominant so she is the main feature within the music video and so this focus creates a star image. The slight aggressive attitude within the music video is often seen in the dance genre because dance is a way for people let their anger and emotions out and so this could be seen as both a positive and negative attitude. The use of a tracking shot allows the audience to get an idea of the genre from mise-en-scene.

The music video is mainly performance but could be considered slightly narrative based because it shows people gathering and dancing together. There is also a close up of the artist’s chest which gives the sense of sexualisation because once again the focus is on her body. There is also the sense of voyeurism through the use of close ups of people dancing, this makes you feel as if you are actually thee and part of the crowd and watching them dance. The speed of the music is matched by using slow motion as a man does a back flip the music slows down and so this matches the speed of the music.
Iconography such as headphones and a music player are indicative of the dance genre because dance focuses on the music energy which is implied with the music video. This music video is entertaining and pleasurable for the audience to watch because of the uses of sexualisation, dance and energy.
