FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE 'STACY'S MOM' MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS

The music video for ‘Stacy’s Mom’ relies heavily on the use of entertainment as it has been made to make Stacy’s Mom appear glamorous and idealistic as well as creating a witty and entertaining narrative that not only amuses the audience but also creates sexual tension to entertain viewers. The use of natural and soft lighting makes Stacy’s mum more appealing as it highlights the face and so there is a relationship between the music and visuals because the song is about how he is in love with Stacy’s mum and so this creates an image of what Stacy’s mum might be like as well as creating an image to please the audience.

The music video begins with a tracking shot of peoples feet, the tracking shot is quite slow and so it matches the speed of the music, one pair of feet are tapping and this taps out the rhythm of the song so this also matches the speed of the song. In some of the shots Stacy’s mum is framed by a window or a curtain, this creates the sense of voyeurism as we are made to feel that we are watching her but she doesn’t know. It also makes us feel like we are the young boy trying to catch a glimpse of Stacy’s mum and so we feel like we are in his shoes. Framing her also makes her appear more prominent within the shot and this is important because she is the main focus and the song is about her. Stacy’s mum wears a red bikini within the music video and red has the connotations of romance and passion and so this also creates a link to the music.

Using a tilt means that the focus is on Stacy’s mum’s body and so it creates sexual tension. Yet, often her head is out of the shot, which means that the sexualisation has been increased because the focus is more on her body than her as a whole. This is also the case with the match on action when she gets in and out of the car because there a shots of her legs which increases the sexual tension. The band’s performance has been included within the narrative and so we are not only able to see the narrative but also the performance at the same time, this means that the music video is narrative and performance based.  However, the performance is abstract as it has a purple background and looks quite ‘pop’ like and so this makes it different from other music video performances.
The use of slow motion increases the sexual tension as lots of the focus is on her and her body. It could also have an Intertextual reference as some of the girls within the ‘James Bond’ films are pictured getting out of the water in their bikinis and so this makes her appear glamorous and as if she was one of the ‘Bond girls’. This music video is effective because it enlist the use of voyeurism to create sexual tension as well as humour to engage, entertain and please viewers.
